The History of the Centre

Naramata Centre was established in 1947 by Bob McLaren, a United Church of Canada minister from Alberta. Founded with a vision of Christian leadership development, the Centre quickly became a vibrant hub for families and volunteers, who contributed to its early infrastructure and communal spirit.

In its heyday during the 1960s and 70s, Naramata Centre thrived with numerous families and staff, fostering an intergenerational community through a variety of programs and activities. The Centre emphasized personal and spiritual growth, encouraging individuals to discover and develop their gifts. It also played a pioneering role in addressing social issues, such as indigenous relations, environmental stewardship, and LGBTQ inclusivity.

The Centre’s history is marked by its focus on creating enriching experiences for youth and young adults, offering courses and programs that promote spiritual and social development. Notable programs include the Healing Pathway and the winter session for young adults, which emphasize leadership, personal growth, and community engagement.

Many visitors recount their experiences at Naramata Centre as transformative, highlighting the sense of freedom, safety, and community they felt. The Centre has been a place for families to reconnect, for individuals to rejuvenate, and for fostering a sense of service that participants carry back to their home communities.

Today, Naramata Centre continues to evolve, seeking to meet the needs of future leaders and providing educational opportunities that empower young people. Deeply intertwined with the local community, it celebrates local agriculture and fosters a slower, more appreciative way of life through events like the Harvest Supper. The Centre aims to inspire visitors to carry forth the spirit of renewal and service into their daily lives, contributing to a growing and supportive community.

Personal Retreats

Our time at the Naramata Centre was nothing short of magical. Imagine a place where quiet, calm, and relaxation envelop you, providing a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

This personal retreat allowed us to just be and breathe, recalibrating our minds and spirits. We rested, recharged, and left feeling rejuvenated, experiencing profound personal transformation and spiritual growth. It was a chance to contemplate, journal, be present, and connect deeply with ourselves, nature, and the sacred.

The lovingly restored cabins were our cozy haven. With clean, comfortable beds and charming retro-style blue appliances that added a delightful touch, we felt right at home, wrapped in comfort and nostalgia. These cabins had everything we needed, from places to hang our clothes to fully equipped kitchens perfect for preparing our meals.

We loved waking up peacefully and embracing the slow living vibe. Mornings in our cabin were a delight, as we made breakfast with the charming retro-style blue appliances and enjoyed the tranquility of our surroundings. Savouring these easy mornings, we felt truly connected to the moment, starting our day with calm and contentment.

And the best part? They even offer pet-friendly units, so our beloved Brandy could join us, making our stay even more special.

The Beautiful Sanctuary

We spent time in the sanctuary, a sacred space designed for quiet reflection and prayer, which further enhanced our spiritual journey.

This beautiful structure, built with dedication by volunteers and executed by local builder Rick Grandbois, features massive reclaimed Douglas fir timbers that give it a timeless and majestic quality. The sanctuary is a gorgeous space, adorned with large windows that flood the room with natural light and provide serene views of the surrounding nature. Inside, the abundance of lush plants adds to the tranquil and inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect haven for contemplation and spiritual renewal.

After our time in the sanctuary, we wandered around the community gardens, immersing ourselves in the vibrant, living tapestry of nature.

Naramata Centre is deeply committed to environmental sustainability and stewardship. This commitment is exemplified by the Naramata Permaculture Farm Garden, a collaborative effort where participants work together to develop an organic garden that supports wildlife and creates a resilient food source for future generations. The garden is designed to function as a harmonious ecosystem, where the diversity of plants and animals enhances the stability and beauty of the environment. Through these efforts, Naramata Centre aims to inspire visitors to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to the preservation of the natural world.

Walking the labyrinth was a transformative experience. Picture a winding path leading you to your own centre, offering a journey of self-discovery and clarity. This ancient practice, nestled within the natural beauty of the Centre, helped us reduce stress, enhance focus, and find a deeper sense of peace.

The Beautiful Beach

The Naramata Centre’s beach was another favourite spot, offering serene views and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for contemplation.

Reading under the amazing old trees was a serene experience, connecting us to the timeless beauty of nature. With 17 acres to explore, Naramata Centre offers countless spots to find your perfect place for reading or journaling. Wandering through the expansive grounds, we could always discover a new, peaceful nook to immerse ourselves in the tranquility and reflect in nature’s embrace.

Exploring Naramata Village and the renowned Naramata Wineries was the perfect complement to our stay. The village’s charm and the exquisite local wines provided a delightful blend of relaxation and discovery.

Naramata Centre, open to people of all ages, is an inclusive and welcoming place where you can connect and deepen in mind, body, and spirit. It’s a peaceful oasis for children, teens, adults, families, and elders to play, relax, grow, and be authentically themselves, all within a supportive community.
