They founded Okanagan Crush Pad, an ambitious venture that would not only establish the country’s first custom crush facility but also nurture the growth of other promising BC winery startups.

In alignment with this commitment, Haywire Winery aims to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. 😲

Packaging, a significant contributor to carbon emissions in the wine industry, has become a focal point for innovation at Haywire Winery. Craig Pingle, General Manager at Haywire Winery and a key figure in the winery’s sustainability efforts, (and maybe one of the Best Ever personalities in the BC Wine world) emphasizes the environmental impact of packaging, stating, “Packaging stands out as a major contributor to carbon emissions in the wine industry, with 25 to 40% of overall emissions originating from this source.”

In response to this challenge, winemakers Matt Dumayne and Katrina D’Costa have implemented the Charmat method of carbonating to reduce the weight of glass bottles used in bottling sparkling wine. Craig Pingle underscores the role of glass in environmental impact, noting, “Glass is the primary culprit due to its weight, being the largest component in packaging.” The innovative approach saves 12 pounds of glass per case, resulting in an impressive annual reduction of 36,000 pounds or 16 tons of glass for the sparkling wine alone.

This reduction in glass weight not only minimizes carbon emissions but also introduces practical benefits. The design allows for a screw cap, facilitating resealing and longer use of the sparkling wine. This simple yet effective innovation has a ripple effect, reducing waste in restaurants as a new bottle doesn’t need to be opened for each fresh glass of sparkling wine.

Haywire Winery has taken a comprehensive approach to packaging sustainability by eliminating printed cardboard packaging. Instead, recycled cardboard is now used for 30,000 cases of wine annually, further reducing the winery’s environmental footprint.

In a unique and eco-friendly pest control measure, the winery employs 50 roosters to manage cutworms and grasshoppers, diminishing the reliance on chemical pest control. Craig Pingle, reflecting on these initiatives, states, “Continuously seeking innovative ways to enhance efficiency, be it cost-effective measures or reducing our environmental impact, is part of our ethos.” The winery’s dedication to sustainability exemplifies how a commitment to innovation can make a substantial impact on both the environment and the wine industry.
