Farm Tours

Embrace The Roots of Abbotsford

When it comes to discovering the heart of a place, few experiences can compare to a visit to the local farms. It’s a journey that goes beyond sightseeing; it fosters a deeper connection, a greater appreciation, and a profound awareness between a traveler, the land visited, and the people who call it home.

There’s something undeniably therapeutic about being outdoors, amidst the fields and orchards. The crisp air, the scent of earth, and the gentle rustle of leaves – it’s nature’s remedy for the soul. But farms are not just about tranquility and picturesque landscapes. They are a vital cornerstone of our world, providing not only sustenance but also playing a pivotal role in promoting and safeguarding regional food systems, contributing to the overall environmental quality.

Yet, let’s face it, the idea of day-to-day life on a farm might not be everyone’s cup of tea. With each passing day, the number of farmers dwindles. This is where you, the curious traveler, step in as a champion. Taking in a farm tour is not only an enriching experience for you, but it’s also a lifeline for hard-working farmers. Your visit provides them with a steady source of income, ensuring they can continue doing what they do best, preserving the land and cultivating the crops we so rely on. And let’s not forget, it’s a boost to the local economy as well.

But what truly sets a farm tour apart is the chance to connect with the farmers and their families. We often read success stories about farmers in glossy magazines and watch them on TV shows. But behind those stories are real people, with real families, and a genuine love for what they do. They’re individuals who deeply appreciate those who choose to support their farm, knowing that each purchase contributes to the livelihood of their family. With an unwavering commitment to making visitors feel at home, they’re always there to share their knowledge and answer every question, painting a vivid picture of their way of life.

So, get ready to roll up your sleeves and step into a world where the roots run deep, and the connection between land, farmer, and visitor is palpable. Join us on an unforgettable journey through Abbotsford’s bountiful farms, where every step is a step towards preserving a way of life and a legacy for generations to come.

Maans Family Farm

A Journey Through Generations, Vertical Greenhouses, and Authentic Farm Experiences

Maan Farms in Abbotsford, Canada, offers visitors a rich and immersive farm experience steeped in family history and agricultural innovation. Founded by Jawahar and Gurbachan Maan in the 1970s, this family-owned venture began with a modest berry stand. Today, it has evolved into a thriving hub of family fun. With activities like the Barnyard Adventureland, Jumping Pillow, Pedal Go Karts, Zipline, and even Goat Yoga, the farm provides a diverse range of entertainment for visitors of all ages. The Maan family’s resilience and the support of the local community have been instrumental in shaping the farm’s character, making it a testament to the power of community spirit in agriculture.

One of the farm’s most remarkable features is the pioneering vertical strawberry greenhouse introduced in 2021. This cutting-edge technology allows Maan Farms to cultivate an impressive ten acres of strawberries on just two acres of land. The greenhouse not only maximizes productivity but also embodies sustainability, employing natural pest control and ergonomic harvesting techniques. This innovative approach has significantly reduced the farm’s dependency on weather conditions, ensuring a consistent and bountiful harvest. The introduction of the greenhouse represents a significant leap in efficiency and sets a new standard for forward-thinking, sustainable agriculture.

Beyond the agricultural marvels, Maan Farms boasts Mama Maan’s Kitchen, where visitors can enjoy authentic, homemade Indian cuisine. After a fire in 2014, Mama Maan took the reins, preparing delectable dishes like samosas, butter chicken, and chickpea curry. This culinary venture has become a beloved staple for both locals and visitors, adding a touch of tradition and warmth to the farm experience.

In every corner of Maan Farms, from the lively Barnyard Adventureland to the serene vertical strawberry greenhouse, the spirit of the farm comes alive, inviting families and friends to create cherished memories amidst the bounty of fall.

Taves Family Farms

Crafting Cherished Family Memories: Adventure, U-Pick, and Cider Delights

Tucked up against the US boarder in the Southlands of Abbotsford, Taves Family Farms stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of farming. For over three generations, this family has lovingly tended to their land, ensuring a bountiful harvest of apples, berries, and an array of seasonal crops.

As third-generation farmers, Loren and Corinne Taves hold a deep commitment to the future of their land, their children, and their community. This dedication is palpable when you step onto their farm, where farm-to-table foods are not just a buzzword, but a way of life. They take immense pride in sharing the taste of the country with visitors, inviting them to experience the rustic charm of the Southlands.

At the heart of the Taves’ offering is the Applebarn, a vibrant hub of summer and fall family fun. This is the place to unleash your inner child and create memories that will last a lifetime. From the thrill of zip track lines to the charm of the Petting Barn, there’s an adventure for every age. Get lost in the twists and turns of mazes, bounce to your heart’s content on the Jumping Pillows, or try your hand at a digital farm experience in FarmVille.

But the true gem of Taves Family Farms lies in their U-Pick experience. Wander through the picturesque orchards with your loved ones, savoring the stunning scenery as you gather your own apples, goji berries, strawberries, or pumpkins. It’s a truly authentic farm adventure that allows you to take home a piece of the countryside, creating cherished memories along the way.

And the journey doesn’t end there. The Taves family warmly extends an invitation to explore their latest venture, Taves Estate Cidery. This inviting space boasts a charming tasting barn and a picturesque picnic area, where from April through December, you can indulge in growler fills, sampling flights, and a selection of uniquely bottled ciders.

In the barnyard, there’s a tale to tell about a mischievous character named Billy—a goat with a penchant for apples and a knack for crafting a special cider blend. Little did anyone know, the other animals joined in, adding their favourite fruits to the mix. Fortunately, Farmer Loren discovered this unique concoction and took it upon himself to bottle it up for all to enjoy. The result? The signature Barnyard Blend, standing proud amidst an array of seasonal ciders and craft cocktails, all awaiting to be savoured on their family and dog-friendly patio.

This new venture marks yet another chapter in the evolving story of Taves Family Farms, showcasing a journey from apples to soft cider, and now, venturing into the delightful world of hard cider.

So, whether you’re a family, a group of friends, or just a kid at heart, Taves Family Farms invites you to step into a world where joy knows no bounds. Join them for an unforgettable adventure, and leave with a little piece of the country nestled in your heart.

We fell in love with the family and the experience, we will be writing a full guide to Taves Family Farms for next season.

But the Fraser Valley’s vinicultural offerings don’t stop there. Here, you’ll find wines that push beyond the traditional grape varieties. The fertile lands yield much more than the standard fare. Singletree Winery

A Grape-Stomping Affair: Unearthing Traditions at Singletree

In the heart of Mt. Lehman, Abbotsford, lies Singletree Winery, a cherished family-operated vineyard that embodies the very essence of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. Its name, though not inspired by a singular tree, holds a profound connection to the pioneering spirit of early farmers across the province. “Singletree” pays homage to the indispensable single-harness yoke, an emblem of the tenacity and resourcefulness that characterized those who toiled the land in days gone by.

The Etsell family, stewards of this fertile vineyard, boast a lineage deeply rooted in the agricultural tapestry of the region. With meticulous care for their land, they are steadfast in their mission to showcase the very best of British Columbia. Three generations of the Etsell family labor alongside one another, and it is the skilled hands of second-generation family member, Andrew Etsell, that craft the wines which bear the Singletree name.

Garnet, Debbie, Andrew, Laura, and the entire family extend a warm invitation, beckoning you to partake in the quintessential experience of BC wine country.

Get Siggy With It

At Singletree Winery, the essence of BC’s wine country is bottled and ready for you to savour. The portfolio boasts an array of varietals, including the flagship Siggy™ Siegerrebe, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Viognier, Rosé, Family Reserve Rosé, Wild Ferment Siegerrebe, and Harness—a Bordeaux-style red blend. For those seeking effervescence, the winery offers both Merryfield, a traditional method sparkling wine, and Victory, a sparkling delight.

While tasting these exceptional wines, visitors are treated to sweeping vistas of the expansive Fraser Valley. The option to pair the wines with an assortment of delectable snacks, or to procure a bottle for a leisurely picnic in the designated area, is also extended. For those seeking a heartier spread, locally smoked meats, cheeses, and seasonal selections are available in the wine shop. Of course, you’re also welcome to bring your own basket of goodies to enjoy amidst the vineyard’s beauty.

In the cooler months, from fall through spring, Singletree unveils two seasonally-decorated Di Vine Domes, offering an intimate space for private tastings. Bookings for these enchanting domes open in the fall, promising a cozy and immersive experience amidst the wintry landscape.

Our visit to Singletree Winery was nothing short of a whimsical adventure, as we had the privilege of participating in their lively Grape Stomping event, a delightful feature of the Taste of Abby celebration. This annual event, a highlight of the local culinary calendar, invites guests to immerse themselves in the heart of harvest season. Taste of Abby offers a rich tapestry of unique culinary experiences, from diverse events to tantalizing tasting menus and limited-edition creations. It’s an opportunity to savour the essence of Abbotsford, celebrating its history, culture, and the bountiful cultivations that thrive in the picturesque Fraser Valley.

As we gathered around the barrels filled with grapes, there was a certain magic in the air. It’s important to note that the grapes we stomped were not the authentic wine grapes sourced from the property’s vineyard. Using those would prove to be a costly venture, potentially depriving us of the acclaimed siegerrebe grapes needed for their flagship Siggy™ wines.

The tradition of foot-treading, or “foot trodden” wine production, has endured through the ages and still finds its place in wineries across British Columbia today. This method, with roots reaching back centuries, involves the gentle crushing of grapes underfoot to extract their precious juice. Sometimes, it’s the winemakers themselves who wade into the vats, a labor of love that connects them intimately with their craft. In modern times, specialized tools designed for this purpose also play a role, ensuring that the process is as efficient as it is time-honoured. This age-old practice is a testament to the enduring artistry of winemaking, where tradition and innovation seamlessly intertwine.

Cannon Estate Winery

Igniting the Wick of Ambition in Abbotsford

In the heart of the Fraser Valley, Andi and Justin Manuel embarked on a transformative journey when they acquired 20 acres of fertile land. Their ambition? To craft a winery. This marked the inception of Cannon Estate Winery, a symbol of their unwavering determination.

Their choice of Fraser Valley over the conventional Okanagan was rooted in one word: microclimate. Nestled beneath the Monashee Mountains, the region’s warming temperatures presented an ideal grape-growing environment. Beyond climate, soil quality, grape varietals, and meticulous care of the crop were integral to their winemaking philosophy.

In seasoned French winemaker Patrick Blandin, the Manuels found a kindred spirit. His arrival in 2017 heralded a new phase for Cannon Winery. Simultaneously, insights from Okanagan winemakers enriched their understanding.

The name “Cannon” embodies the Manuels’ philosophy – a commitment to wholeheartedly invest in their ventures. Their determination is unwavering, a testament to their resolve to demonstrate that the Fraser Valley is an emerging jewel in the Canadian winemaking realm.

Cannon Estate Winery, located at 30523 Burgess Ave. in west Abbotsford, officially opened its doors on Nov. 16. For owners Andi and Justin Manuel, this venture is more than a winery; it’s a testament to their belief that the Fraser Valley is a hidden gem in the Canadian winemaking landscape.

Their journey was not without its moments of doubt and challenges. Andi recalls a pivotal moment when uncertainty loomed large, and Justin, in his characteristic boldness, declared, “It’s too late… the wick is lit!” This marked a solemn pact between them – a commitment to forge ahead, defy the skeptics, and unveil the Fraser Valley’s potential as a rising star in Canadian winemaking.

To bring their vision to life, the Manuels enlisted the expertise of Patrick Blandin, a seasoned viticulturist and winemaker, and sought guidance from esteemed winemakers in the Okanagan. After meticulous planning and dedicated effort, the first vines were planted in 2018, yielding their inaugural harvest in 2021. Today, approximately 12.4 acres of their 20-acre property are under vine, hosting 16 varietals across 23 distinct plots. From Chardonnay to Muscat, Petite Milo to Pinot Noir and Gamay Noir, the vineyard is a mosaic of diverse grapes.

Cannon Estate Winery boasts two labels – Cannon and The Wick. While Cannon wines are crafted using refined French winemaking techniques, The Wick label is an exploration of both Old and New World methods. It’s a testament to the Manuels’ dedication to producing exceptional wines that bear the imprint of their unique approach and commitment to excellence.
